The Case for Medium-Level Automation in HR

The automation false choice.

HR teams usually face two options: Do it all manually (drowning in spreadsheets), or automate everything (and lose the human element that matters).

Both extremes fail. Manual processes don't scale. Full automation loses the nuance that human judgment brings. The answer isn't either/or — it's both/and.

What is medium-level automation?

Medium-level automation means systems handle routine decisions and data flow, while humans handle judgment calls and exceptions. It looks like:

  • Workflow, not decision. Automate the process of getting information to the right person, not the decision itself.
  • Alerts, not actions. When something unusual happens (flight risk indicator, retention concern), alert the right leader and let them decide.
  • Standardization with flexibility. Onboarding templates exist, but managers can customize for their teams.

The goal of automation in HR isn't to replace human judgment. It's to free humans from data entry so they can focus on judgment.

Why it works.

Medium-level automation scales without losing the human connection. It reduces cycle time (getting data is fast) while preserving decision quality (the decision is human).

It also respects employees. No one wants to be fully automated. But everyone appreciates systems that make processes faster and less painful.

The organizations winning at talent are the ones that automate the boring parts and keep the human parts human.
