The oldest form of technology in recorded history is the humble pen and paper.

After all, we needed writing to record history. Since the ancient Mesopotamians invented papyrus and started documenting things, writing has enabled humanity to record events and ideas — and transmit them across generations.

We like to think we have come a long way since those primitive times. But in truth, the basic function has not changed. Only the tools have evolved.

Writing has two core functions: to document, and to inspire. That will never change so long as humans exist, no matter the tools. The only question is whether the person using the tool grows alongside it.

The victims of the printing press were the entrenched classes of the middle ages — those who controlled information and lost their monopoly when it became freely transmissible. The victims of the AI age will be organisations that fail to harness it to unlock greater value from their existing human resources — leaving them outpaced by leaner, smarter competitors tackling bigger problems with the same headcount.

AI is a rocket engine.

Organisations that cannot expand their human capacity to operate at the next level will not slowly decline — they will disintegrate.

The switch starts with how organisations manage their most fundamental asset: structured knowledge. How decisions are made, documented, tracked, and audited. That is the connective tissue between human intelligence and machine intelligence. Without it, AI has nothing meaningful to accelerate.
